At the center of the enchanting rolling meadows, lived a shepherd boy. His life was unadulterated, simple, and honest. His primary duty was essentially to look after his herd of sheep.
Their low murmuring and the rustling of the wind among the lone here tree on the hilltop were his constant companions. Day upon day, watching over his charges instilled in him a notion of tranquil contentment.
But, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plan.
Tales of wolves prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One day he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but saw no wolf.
The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This game laughed for a couple of more days. But, one day, a real wolf actually come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
